I have visited Barbados a number of times over the years and the restaurant I have been to every year without fail is Champers and my most recent visit was no exception!
Champers is situated on a cliff top location overlooking Rockley beach. From our hotel (South Beach) we walked there for dinner. When we arrived we were seated on a comfortable sofa whilst our table was prepared. Although Champers is a very nice restaurant, one of the best in my opinion, it has a relaxed air about it. Possibly this is due to the waves lapping up against the rocks.
After a few minutes we were taken to our table, an oceanside one like we had requested. Here we could look down to the sea and I think there is something very soothing about listening to the waves.
We shared a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc with dinner and decided to opt for the set menu. On this there were at least 2 of the starters I was going to choose from the main menu so it made sense to choose the set one. For $99 Barbados you get a delicious 3 course meal.
To start I had coconut shrimp. This is one of my favourite local dishes in Barbados and I hadn’t had it all trip until this point. As I have said in previous posts the shrimp in Barbados is super meaty and really tasty. Keil went for the crab crepe and again this was delicious. You can never have too much fish whilst in Barbados!
For my main course I had chicken with a mushroom and brandy sauce. The sauce was creamy but not too rich, in fact it was downright delicious! The chicken was accompanied with polenta and I was hesitant as I had never tried this before, it was just liked mashed potato, except a little ‘thinner.’ Keil went for lamb shank and this was very nice and the meat came off the bone easily, both portions were generous for a nice restaurant.
It was then time to choose dessert, I had the white chocolate cheesecake which came with vanilla ice cream and was as good as it sounds. Keil had Bajan Bread Pudding which was a warm pudding with fruit and was very nice.
As always we had a fabulous evening at Champers, it really is a must visit restaurant for anyone visiting Barbados – We loved it!
After dinner we slowly walked back, calling for a quick drink at Bert’s before heading to the hotel feeling content and happy.
