Going to watch a good film is one of my favourite things to do. When I saw the trailor for Money Monster I must admit I wasn’t 100% sure if I wanted to see it but I went along regardless with an open mind. I thought it could either be really good or really rubbish, happily for me it was the former. Money Monster stars George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Jack O’Connell. It’s also directed by Jodie Foster and as a film it exceeded my expectations – It was really enjoyable, tense and at times funny.
The film opens with Clooney playing Lee Gates, a cheesy talk show host who shares tips around the money markets. His director Patty Fenn, played by Julia Roberts struggles to keep him on script and under control! Everything changes when Kyle Budwell (O’Connell) sneaks on set armed with a gun and bomb taking Gates hostage. Upset because he has lost all his money on a tip from the host he goes on a crusade to try and get his money back.
The film explores the darkside of the financial markets, the corruption and the risks. At times funny, other times tense but throughout it all Clooney and Roberts keep their chemistry and have a bond which keeps an element of calm, a bond much like they have in real life, despite very rarely being onscreen together.
Of course Brit Jack O’Connell is a star of the future, he was excellent in Starred Up too. He is a great actor and in Money Monster holds his own alongside the always charismatic Clooney.
Despite not knowing too much about it before going to the cinema Money Monster was a very enjoyable film which I’d highly recommend.
