It feels like there’s a shift at the moment as the world changes and social media begins to follow. This is common every few years, you get used to your favourite platforms and then things change.
It feels like there is lots of confusion around the online world, things like blogging, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok are continuing to change and you have to navigate your way around them. Understanding social media trends alone can be a full-time job!
You might be feeling a little bit fed up with the current social media landscape as things you have been doing are no longer getting the engagement they once did. This is especially the case when it comes to Instagram.
For years, Instagram has allowed us to share and document our lives. It started as photos and now has implemented so many other features such as stories and videos In the past, many of the changes felt really good. They continued to allow us to share what we enjoyed and consume wonderful content.
Lately, there have been so many changes it doesn’t always feel like they are getting it right. Especially when you scroll Instagram and see people expressing their views that they are not enjoying the platform anymore. As a side note, this can be a great lesson for businesses to listen to their consumers rather than focusing on the competition ie TikTok!
What’s next for social media?
This is why I have always loved blogging. I even used to teach a blogging course in my old business which I recently sold. With a blog, you are in control. It’s another reason I continue to blog here, it gives me a chance to do whatever I want. When you have a blog, you own the domain and will always have your own content. You can use social media marketing to build your brand and direct people to your blog content.
I’ve been in business long enough to see social media platforms come and go, change and see people stop using them. It feels a little bit that way with Instagram right now as they continue to prioritise video. I enjoy consuming and creating some videos but I also love photos.
For me, I am focusing on spreading my brand across different platforms including YouTube, this blog and my podcast, An Electrifying Life. All of these offer different experiences for me and for the consumer. This is alongside running my e-commerce businesses.

That’s not to say you need to get on every platform today but it is worth considering where you want to spend your time at the moment and where people are consuming. I’ve seen a lot of people heading over to TikTok for the short-form video content so this is also something to consider.
Social media strategy will always ebb and flow and it’s so important to remember that you only own your own domain such as a blog but it doesn’t mean you can’t consume, create and have fun along the way! I have found that a lot of people lately have discovered me through my podcast and even TikTok!
There is no doubt video will continue to be important moving forward but it doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for other social media content that you want to create. My advice is to try different things, see what works, do more of that and then continue to keep testing!
