Having a strong personal brand can be a fun element of building a business. It is all about you and although you have to put yourself out there, it can lead to lots of opportunities, it’s easy for you to pivot and you can be yourself. The benefits of building a personal brand can outweigh any negatives and in today’s online world it’s much easier to do it.
I often resisted having a fully personal brand. Before I sold my content-based business, I was the face of that brand so it was hard work to build that and my personal brand on social media. Now that I am focused on my e-commerce businesses, I can have more fun building my personal brand.
Why build a personal brand?
Some of my favourite online brands are personal ones. They are business owners who I have bought from over the years because I like them and trust them. When they launch something I have often been the first in the queue to make a purchase.
I like to see the behind the scenes of life and business, I connect with them and enjoy their content. I know that if I feel like this then others will too.

For me, the personal brand means I am able to talk about whatever interests me and doesn’t have to be niched down like some other businesses might. I can use different platforms such as this blog, YouTube, social media and my podcast and I can test things without it having a big impact on my bottom line.
Having a successful personal brand means I can direct people to my other businesses and offerings at different times to try it to make it easy for people to understand what I do. When you own multiple businesses it can be hard to make it clear what you do so having a personal brand allows you to share this and become an authority in business.
Later this year, I will be publishing a book so again having a personal brand will help with this.
If you run a business where you don’t need to be the face of it, then consider having a personal brand. Even if you do, you might enjoy building a more personalised brand if you think it’s the right fit for you.
A personal brand is “you”. It’s a place for you to make the rules, stamp your authority on what you are known for and a place online to have some fun!
