We arrived for our 2 week holiday in Barbados at the end of August 2014. We have been fortunate to visit the island a number of times before but always earlier in the year. We had never stayed on the West Coast before so we chose to stay there for the first 5 nights at the Tropical Sunset hotel in Holetown. This is just a few miles north of the ultra-exclusive Sandy Lane Resort.
We got a taxi from the airport which only took about half an hour. When we arrived it had just gotten dark so we missed the sunset that night. We quickly checked in and headed up to our room. The hotel doesn’t have lifts so Keil kindly carried my case up the stairs! Our room was lovely. With a kitchen area as you walked in which included a fridge and freezer, coffee maker, toaster, oven and all your plates and utensils. My favourite part was the balcony which looked out to the sea. On an evening you had a fantastic view of the sun as it set into the caribbean sea.
The location of the Tropical Sunset hotel is ideal, especially if you go room only like us. I can’t understand staying All Inclusive in Barbados, there is too much to do and too many great restaurants to try! Directly opposite was a shopping centre with a supermarket and Bean and Bagel where one morning we went for breakfast and had eggs and bagels.
There is a bus stop outside so you an easily go north to Speightstown or south to the capital of Bridgetown.
Apart from the sea and beach, on which you have free sun loungers and umbrellas, kindly put out by Curly. One of the best bits is Zaccios which is a restaurant and also a beach bar. The bar has a happy hour every night 4pm-6pm where drinks are on special, these include rum punch, daiquiris, pina colada, beer, spirits and house wine. This is the ideal place to watch the sunset. On a previous trip we had visited the bar for happy hour, it used to be called Cocomos and so we didn’t realise it was the same place at first! The bar staff at Zaccios were super friendly too.
After one hot morning on the beach we went to Zaccios for lunch. I had a chicken sandwich and it was delicious, we also shared the Bajan speciality macaroni pie. It was lovely to sit down overlooking the beach and enjoy lunch. It was also great to spend some time in the shade!
On our final night we decided to get a pizza from the takeaway which is connected to Zaccios as we wanted to just relax in our room. We ordered a pizza to share and garlic bread which were both delicious!
We had a fabulous 5 nights staying at the Tropical Sunset and on Saturday it was time to move to the South Coast and enjoy a day at the races.

Wow a little slice of paradise! Going somewhere like this is on my bucket list (never been further than Portugal, and that was when I was about 14!)
