I have a confession. This post was supposed to be a review of the book I have just finished. Except I haven’t read one. I remembered as I walking though Waterstones this morning and it dawned on me I haven’t even looked at a book for a long time.
What’s the Problem?
For some of you this may not be a big deal. I have plenty of friends and family who never read. The thing is I’m ‘supposed’ to be a reader. I love to write and to do this you need to read. Half of my degree was about English Literature and reading. Plus I actually love to read.
So why haven’t I? Whilst browsing the tables in Waterstones, I realised I didn’t have a clue what the latest books were about and what I wanted to read next. I thought about why haven’t been reading anything recently.
For a while I only read fiction, I read a lot for my degree and it all got a bit overwhelming. Then to help with my own development and that of my business I only read self-improvement and business books. The last few months there has been no reading at all.
I am huge advocate of self-development and business books. When I was reading them regularly it made a huge difference to my confidence, my mindset and my business. I aim of 10 pages a day. That’s not a lot. The idea of this is to make it easier to take in what you are being taught, it fits into your life and you don’t become overwhelmed with information. There’s no reason to not be doing this everyday.
There needs to be a balance. I guess the problem is when you find a good book you never put it down, I have lost plenty of days lost in the world of a good book. This makes me feel like I don’t have time to read or when I’m reading fiction I really should be doing something else!
So what’s the solution? Read! Whether it be reading or something else which you enjoy then you need to make the time for it. I am sure you are just as busy, if not busier than me. That’s why we have to make sure we create time. I know there are evenings when I watch crap on TV, I could spend this 20 minutes getting into a good book. If all you were doing was watching TV and not doing anything else there should be no guilt.
It’s decided. I will read again! Luckily next month I am going on a beach holiday so I will be able to read everyday and get through lots of books. Until then I will find the time – A couple of hours a week to do something which I love.
If you are not a bookworm, make sure you create the time to do something you love. If you are bookworm keep it up!
So watch this space there will be some more book reviews in the future, so far on this blog I have reviewed Beautiful and the Fat Burn Revolution. There will be fiction, self-improvement and anything else I can get my hands on!
To answer the question of this blog – What’s so good about reading? I believe it allows you to use your imagination and your mind to understand the words and also envision the world which you are reading. It can also educate you and I believe you never stop learning. Finally it can be a form of escapism, in todays busy world you can forget about the mundane and expand your mind!
