Whilst on holiday in Barbados I read quite a few books. When away I love laying on the sun lounger and reading lots and lots. I shared which books I was going to be taking with me in my What’s In My Travel Bag post.
The first book I read was The Fault In Our Stars. I had heard the hype and seen trailers for the film and I quite fancied reading the book but I wasn’t sure if it was really for me. Being quite a few years out of my teens I didn’t know if I would be captivated by a teenage love story. I was.
The book was a birthday gift and I dived straight in on my first day in the Caribbean. I was instantly hooked. The story is about a teenage girl, Hazel, who is terminally ill with cancer. Life is pretty mundane and not that fun for her until there is a major plot twist (as the book describes it) in the form of Augustus. He is good looking, fun and flirty. Without giving too much away the story then follows their journey as they fall in love.
What I liked about the book is it feels much more grown up than a teen book. The writing itself is very educated and at times very clever. There were sad moments, happy times and very poignant areas within the story.
To talk about it properly I would have to give away the ending and I certainly don’t want to spoil it for you if you’ve not read the book.
On the plane home I watched the film adaptation. Like usual, I felt the book was better but the film was very enjoyable, I somehow found the film version a lot sadder – This could also be the fault of the altitude!
If you’ve not yet read The Fault in our Stars I would certainly recommend it. It was easy to read but also thought provoking at the same time.

Like you, I usually prefer the book to the film version of a story. The one exception to this was “Outbreak”, where the book was written after the film – they were both awful, but the book was really dreadful! Glad you enjoyed the book
I’ve wanted to read this and since I’m not a teen anymore I had the same worry but I will give it a read now. I love reading recommended books so this on the shopping list x
