Last weekend, fresh from the Tour de France excitement we decided to go to York Races for the day. It was a last minute decision but seeing as the weather was so nice and sunny it seemed like a good idea.
A Day At The Races
It’s been a while since we have been to York Races. As the weather was so nice it felt like everyone else had the same idea! The train was packed as we made our way from Leeds to York.
Once we arrived in York we set off walking to the racecourse, stopping at a supermarket on the way for some supplies. There are 3 sections at York Races where you can watch all the action. We decided on the Course Enclosure, which is a grass area. As it hadn’t rained for some time it wouldn’t be muddy. Here you can take in your own food and drink.
When we arrived it was the busiest I have ever seen it. The cost for the Course Enclosure was £8. The other 2 areas you have to dress smarter and can’t take your own food or drink in. I have been into the Grandstand before and really enjoyed it. I would like to try the County Stand too one time! These are on the opposite side of the track to where we were.
There were lots of people sat having picnics and enjoying the day. It really was hot and sunny so it was great to make the most of the nice weather.
We got a copy of the Racing Post and studied the horses. I don’t know much about horse racing but had a good go. You place your bets at the betting stands, there are lots of them and it’s always good to compare the odds.
Throughout the day I didn’t have a single winner! I did however place all my bets as each way. This means if the horse places, usually in the top 3 but it depends on the size of the field, you still win some money. I had 4 each ways come in so at least I felt like I won something!
There was a really good atmosphere at York Races. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the day and there was lots of cheering and shouting at each race.
Once it was all over we went for a few drinks in York to let the crowds die down at the train station. After a couple of hours we headed home on a slightly quieter train. Overall we had a great day, next time we go we just need some winners!
